A Taste of Romance - Lorna Kelly

Tell us about your writing career

I am nearing completion of my first book, which I plan to self publish. It doesn’t have a title yet. I’ve always been a voracious reader and enjoyed writing at school. I’ve been a member of Writers 2000 for nearly 10 years, and have entered our monthly competitions of short stories and poems. I also enter the annual competition and have won or been placed regularly. I also had a poem accepted for the Avbob website four years ago.

Why did you choose to write romance?

Love makes the world go round, whether we admit it or not

What is the name of your story in the anthology?

A Taste of Romance

Blurb:

Hoping to heal after her shattered engagement, Olivia reluctantly takes on a new photographic assignment. Food shoots are her favorite, after all. She doesn’t realize the heat she’ll experience in the kitchen of Devin, her equally hot and very tasty client.

What was your inspiration for this story?

During my career as a graphic designer (before I changed to a full time sports massage, reflexology and reiki practitioner), I did a lot of photo direction. I especially enjoyed the styling of photos for kitchen appliance brochures or for photographic sets. Beautiful kitchens. Why not combine all?

What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning this story?

Drew on my former career of art director and sometimes stylist. And my love of watching cooking programs.

How long did it take you before you began writing this story and then, how long did it take then to complete?

It’s actually adapted from a Writers 2000 fiction story. I was awarded 2nd place for this.

How do you select the names of your characters?

Favorite names from either people that I’ve known or TV or movie characters. Only people that I’ve liked. I have to like my characters, even the nasty ones!

How do you like to collect and organise your ideas?

Post-it notes and on my tablet if I have a gap between clients but in my mind, predominantly. I try to write the ideas down before they dissolve and leave my head!

Are you a plotter or a Pantser?

Bit of both. I know the beginning and the end. How the characters get to the end is always the challenge.

LORNA'S BIO:

I was born in the UK, and we moved to Durban when I was 8 years old as my dad was transferred where I attended St Mary’s DSG in Kloof up to Matric. I studied Graphic Art at the Durban Technikon, then worked as a designer for a looong time in both Corporate and retail. During this time I studied various types of Massage, Reflexology and Reiki and I practised part time. Ten years ago, I’d had enough of graphic design and became a full time body therapist, based at the Premier Health Centre in Blairgowrie.

I’ve always been a voracious reader of many genres but my favorites are romance and thrillers, so I tend to combine both in my writing. Les and myself are proud mommies of two labradors (that are foster fails), and two cats, rescued as kittens. When I plant a tree, I give them names eg Alfred Avo, Priscilla Peach, Lucy Lemon and Maggie Minneola…'
